During 1982 two screws were added onto the bridge to keep it from pulling away from the body. For the first part of the year bridges didn't have these extra screws. A checkerboard binding was available as an option.

1982 Ric 4003 features include: Cresting wave shaped headstock, Kluson riveted tuners with phillips head screws, black plastic bushings and shims under the tuner plates or Grover wavy Imperial tuners with chrome bushings, raised logo on plastic truss rod cover (plexiglass on left handed models), dual truss rods with adjustment nuts at both ends, smaller triangle pearloid fret markers, neck through body design, 20 frets, four pole neck pickup, four pole bridge pickup with chrome surround and cover, white two-piece pickguard, heptagonal shaped knobs with silver tops and lettering, CTS pots, yellow capacitors, ric-o-sound input jack plate, 3 way pickup toggle switch, chrome bridge assembly including mutes, black case with blue or black interior.

The letters on the chrome input jack plate determine the year and month of production. The digits indicate the number of production. Some examples of 1982 Rickenbacker serial numbers are:
