Headstock backs had eight shallow divets routed in the wood, hidden underneath the tuning plates to accommodate the tuner protrusions.
Other 1962 Ric 4000 features: cresting wave shaped headstock with walnut wings, Kluson "long neck" riveted tuners, plexiglass truss rod cover with logo but no model name, dual truss rods, striped nut, full width neck through body design with no skunk stripe, 20 frets, dot fret markers, no binding, gold painted pickguard, clear plexiglass thumb rest, horseshoe shaped bridge pickup with chrome surround, two chrome knobs, guitar bridge assembly including metal stamped serial number, chrome bridge cover with foam mute, clear plexiglass bridge cover guides, CTS potentiometers, orange molded capacitor, plastic wiring, mono input jack plate, strapholder, silver case with blue interior.
The letters on the bridge plate determine the year and month of production. The digits indicate the number of production. Some examples of 1962 Rickenbacker serial numbers are:
