1982 "Flying" V characteristics: Small V shaped headstock with silkscreened gold logo including the "i" dot connected to the "G" and open "o", two screw plastic truss rod cover including the model name, serial number stamped into back of headstock, Schaller BM tuners with Gibson logo engraved on gear plate, bound rosewood 21 fret board with pearloid dot fret markers, two black humbucker pickups, black/white/black/white/black pickguard including input jack, three silver top/black witch hat shaped knobs including numbers and volume/tone words, pickup selector switch, 3 pole bridge, strapholder on body back. Available in Ebony, Alpine White, Silverburst and Transparent Blue finishes.

Serial numbers used the eight digit headstock dating scheme. Ex: YDDDYPPP- The first and fifth letter indicate year of production. The second, third and fourth letters indicate the day of production within the year. The sixth, seventh and eighth letters indicate the manufacturing plant: 001 to 499 shows production rank at the Kalamazoo factory and 500-999 shows production rank at the Nashville factory.
