1980 G3 characteristics: Small V shaped black headstock with silkscreened gold logo including the "i" dot connected to the "G" and open "o", Schaller M-4 tuners with Gibson name on gear cover, two screw plastic truss rod cover including the model name, pearloid dot fret markers, 4 bolt maple neck, Gibson name neck plate, input jack on black/white/black/white/black pickguard, three black plastic covered single coil pickups showing no pole pieces, three position pickup selector switch, chrome bridge cover, single slot saddle metal plate bridge, two black speed knobs including numbers, string through three piece maple or alder body.
Gibson continued the eight digit serial number headstock dating scheme in 1980. Ex: YDDDYPPP- The first and fifth letter indicate year of production. The second, third and fourth letters indicate the day of production within the year. The sixth, seventh and eighth letters indicate the manufacturing plant: 001 to 499 shows production rank at the Kalamazoo factory and 500-999 shows production rank at the Nashville factory.
