During the year the control knobs changed to black plastic, including numbers and the word "volume" or "tone". The ground wire route underneath the bridge became round. Antigua finish was available. Rectangular plastic cases were introduced, along with black tolex Fender silver logo cases. Interior colors were orange or rust.

Other 1977 Jazz bass characteristics: Smaller headstock decal including serial number beginning with an "S7" and applied under the finish (for more precise dating cross reference the serial number with the instrument's neck butt, pickup and pot codes), no "Offset Contour Body" decal, Schaller "open back" Fender name imprinted clover tuners with an ® mark and no rivet, bullet truss rod adjustment at headstock, rosewood fretboard or one piece maple neck with skunk stripe, pearloid block fret markers, white plastic neck binding, medium jumbo fret wire, neck butt date etc. ink stamps, extra hole on neck butt for hanging while painting, 3 bolt F Series neck plate with tilt adjust and no serial number, neck pocket paint stick etc., extra hole in neck pocket for hanging while painting, black/white/black/white/black vinyl pickguard or white/black/white vinyl pickguard, thumbrest above E string, date ink stamped grey bobbin pickups, chrome pickup cover and bridge cover with foam rubber string mute, heptagonal shaped knobs (for first part of year), CTS potentiometers, ground shield under pots assembly, blue drop tone capacitor, plastic wiring, single groove bridge saddles.
